(AP Photo/Martin Meissner). United States' Michael Phelps celebrates as his team wins the gold medal in the men's 4x100-meter freestyle final during the swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

After the American men's 4×100-meter relay team won gold, Michael Phelps reached down to help anchorman Nathan Adrian out of the pool.

Going second in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, Phelps produced the fastest split of his career and put the Americans out front for good against a powerhouse field that included defending champion France, Australia and Russian Federation.

Heading into the Rio Olympics, the US women's gymnastics team has been favorite to medal in each of the events and is now the favorite to take home gold in the team all-around finals - perhaps by a record-setting point difference.

World and Olympic record holder Phelps led throughout most of Monday's semi-final before being pipped in the last 25 meters by Tamas Kenderesi of Hungary, who finished 0.16 ahead of the American.

Held swam the third leg, with Phelps handing over to him after giving the team an advantage over defending champions France at the earlier turn, and he said the only thought in his mind was not to lose any ground.

Still, this was all a bit of a surprise after Phelps turned in some rather lackluster times at the U.S. Olympic trials just a month before the Rio Games.

Michael Phelps who was also part of the swimming team for 2012 USA men's relay team which had France winning though its was a fierce competition, said then in an interview that his team will surely bring back the medal in future.

It was a night of world records in Rio. Vladimir Morozov, initially banned from the Olympics, was one of Russia's relay swimmers.

Britain's Adam Peaty took more than 1.5sec off the men's 100m breaststroke world record after Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom had also broken the record in the women's race.

"He hadn't really done a good 100 free in the season". In addition, she could pick up another gold in the 4×200 free relay. While the 200-meter IM is marketed as the anticipated final race between Phelps and American teammate Ryan Lochte, Hagino could easily spoil the iconic swim on Thursday.

In all, six world records have fallen on the first two days of swimming. @m_phelps00 was showing @boomerrphelps his gold medal and boomer had SO much to say. He was too overcome with emotion on the top spot of the medal podium. A second drunken-driving arrest.

"I thrive off their energy, I feel more confident", Held said.
