Phelps holds a record 22 gold medals (26 medals overall), the latest secured in the 200-meter individual medley final on Thursday.

Now it's Phelps' turn to be shell-shocked, as Schooling put him in a position he's not used to: second place.

"I hit all my goals right on the nose this week", she said.

The appreciative crowd at Olympic Aquatics Stadium, who greeted him with sustained applause, included Phelps' fiancee, Nicole Johnson, and the couple's 3-month-old, Boomer, who somehow was able to sleep despite the din.

Phelps has already amassed three golds at the Rio Games and has other priorities, balancing the need to qualify comfortably without damaging his chances for the evening men's 200m individual medley final. Hardware he's got - in spades.

It's a far cry from when the young Schooling had his photo taken with Phelps in 2008. "Someone had to tell me".

" All my hard work has paid off and I am really happy about it".

As it happens, Phelps is Schooling's idol. "It's just insane", said Schooling. Schooling, is a swimmer for University of Texas, will reportedly receive a $750,000 bonus from the Singaporean National Olympic council. In fact, Rio de Janeiro is teeming with Longhorns - 25 athletes from the school representing seven countries. Sophomore Townley Haas and seniors Jack Conger and Clark Smith helped the USA achieve the gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay Tuesday evening at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Michael Phelps congratulates Joseph Schooling after Schooling won the men's 100m butterfly gold.

Cal's Anthony Ervin capped his own remarkable personal journey with a gold in the 50 freestyle - 16 years after he won his first individual gold in the same event at the Sydney Games. It's the first medal of the Rio Games for the Romanians, who outscored China 44-38.

Two women's freestyle golds were handed out on Thursday after Canada's Penny Oleksiak and Simone Manuel of the United States recorded the same time. "Throwing me out there for another four years.' If he wants to come back for another four years, it will be fun to watch". "I wrote my parents an email this morning just saying thank you and I started bawling on my bed and then my roommates came in and comforted me".

She was sure ready for Rio, though. Her final score was 62.198 - a huge gymnastics margin of 2.1 points over the silver medalist, her teammate Aly Raisman.

Joseph Schooling's single-minded, seven-year chase of his Olympic dream bore fruit when he touched home first on Friday night (Brazil time), showing the world - and his countrymen back home - what a small country like Singapore is capable of at sport's pinnacle.
