The result was no longer in doubt by the time Phelps dove in.

Three days into the 2016 Rio Olympics - his fifth Olympic Games - the 31-year-old has yet to disappoint.

Phelps swam the final leg an hour after winning his 20th gold in the 200 meters butterfly.

Of course, as you probably know, Phelps did not win his semifinal heat. Le Clos has lobbed taunts at Phelps since coming from behind to beat Phelps in London four years ago.

The British earned silver in 7:03.13, while Japan took the bronze in 7:03.50. Phelps will also be part of the 4×200 freestyle relay on Tuesday, a race the Americans have won at the last three Olympics.

It was the fourth successive U.S. Olympic victory in the event.

With her 1 minute, 53.73-second victory, Ledecky is one victory from being the first woman in almost a half-century to sweep the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles in a single Olympic Games.

Phelps famously re-created an iconic Spitz portrait on the cover of Sports Illustrated and was later named the magazine's 2008 Sportsman of the Year. "It's sad that today in sports in general, not just only swimming, there are people who are testing positive who are allowed back in the sport - and multiple times".

The 19-time Olympic gold medal victor posted the third-fastest time in his preliminary heat on Monday, good enough for fifth fastest overall and a spot in the semis. "I was trying not to even really look at him".

Phelps reemerged from a brief retirement to represent the U.S.in Rio.

Ever since his debut, he has been an absolute wonder in the swimmer's world. In early 2009, Phelps was handed a three-month suspension from US swimming due to the leakage of a photograph of him using a bong to smoke marijuana. "It feels good to get it back".
